While wandering on campus, you may notice that there are numerous red and orange ribbons tied to the bridge crossing Laurel Creek from Environment 3 to St. Paul’s. In 2016, the Waterloo Indigenous Student Centre began tying red ribbons to the bridge to honour and provide a gentle reminder of the lives of 4000+ missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people, as a part of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. This year, there are also orange ribbons tied to the bridge to remember the lives of over 7000 children who died from the violence at residential schools in Canada.
You will see the red and orange ribbons on the bridge from November 6th-November 19th, with a closing ceremony on November 19th at 1:00 pm. If you would like to read more about this annual installation, please see the full event details here.
