Stratford Police may offer more sessions of Citizens Police Academy following success of initial program

A celebration for the first graduating class of the Stratford Police citizens police academy was held this week.
They didn't walk away with a gun and a badge but graduates of the first-ever Citizens Police Academy did get an education.

The eight-week course gave participants an intimate look at all aspects of policing including how the canine unit works, how criminal investigations take place and what the emergency response team does. There were 60 applicants and 15 were given the opportunity to participate. The goal was to get a "cross-section" of the community, Stratford police Chief Mike Bellai said.

A short graduation ceremony was held Wednesday night at the University of Waterloo Stratford Campus. Bellai was so impressed with the way the program went he's considering having it run twice a year, in spring and fall.
