GreenHouse celebrates their 28th Social Impact Showcase; awards funding to 5 social ventures

Each term, GreenHouse hosts the Social Impact Showcase to celebrate the amazing work on students in our community. This term, 11 student-led ventures pitched their ideas for social and environmental change and 5 teams were awarded funding from the Social Impact Fund. Congratulations to all of our participants on the impressive progress that you've made this term. You make the United College community proud!

And the winners are...

Entomatia

Entomatia was awarded $10,000 for his research into an ethical and sustainable replacement for fetal bovine serum. Entomatia is led by Nicholas Cheng, School of Pharmacy.

Electric Boats Inc. 

Electric Boats Inc. was awarded $5,000 for the development of an electric boat that is capable of cleaning local lakes and waterways of plastic pollution. Electric Boats is led by Chanakya Ramdev, Faculty of Environment. 

NewGen Health

NewGen Health was awarded $1,500 for the development of a rapid test to aid in the early detection of kidney disease. NewGen Health is led by Mazhar Shahen (Faculty of Health), Zaid Mubeen (Faculty of Science), and Shiv Naik (Faculty of Science). 

Merge2Own

Merge2Own was awarded $1,500 for their innovative model to reduce barriers to home ownership for first time buyers. Merge2Own is led by Chinazom Uwaoma (Masters of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology) and Ernest Onuorah (Masters of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology).

Waterloo Alternative Project Project

The People's Choice Award was granted to the Waterloo Alternative Protein Project, a student design team focused on increasing education and awareness of alternative proteins. The Alt Protein Project was awarded $1,000 towards their venture and was pitched by Marie De Mey (Faculty of Engineering), Rikard Saqe (Faculty of Math), and Tharun Ragulan (Faculty of Science).
