Enrolment in Aboriginal studies course jumps by more than 400 percent

The University of Waterloo’s course in Aboriginal studies (“Issues in Contemporary Native Communities”) saw a whopping 400 percent increase in student enrolment this term – something that may reflect a broader societal interest in Aboriginal culture and communities, says Graham Brown, Principal of St. Paul’s University College, where the course is taught.

St. Paul’s welcomes refugee student from Congo

Among the many new students who started classes at UWaterloo this fall is Leonard Honore, a refugee student from the Democratic Republic of Congo who is living at St. Paul’s. He is being sponsored through the University of Waterloo’s and World University Services of Canada’s (WUSC) Student Refugee Program. All Waterloo students contribute to the program through a dollar-per-term levy administered by the Federation of Students. St. Paul's students also help cover the sponsored students' accommodation and meals through a volunteer student levy.

St. Paul’s community rallies in support of Nepalese relief effort

Lindsay Kalbfleisch, a Recreation and Leisure student who lived at St. Paul’s in 2010-11, was immediately moved to action when she heard the news about the devastating earthquake in Nepal. Kalbfleisch had travelled to Mount Everest base camp along with 13 other UWaterloo students and their Geography Professor Sanjay Nepal in April 2014. International Development students return from field placements

Twenty-seven fourth-year International Development (INDEV) students return to campus on Monday, April 27 after two terms interning with local development organizations in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Placed through the World University Service of Canada in countries such as Senegal, Ghana, Nepal, Peru, Vietnam, Botswana, and Burkina Faso, the students will have a week of debriefing and then make final presentations at a capstone event at St. Paul’s University College on Friday, May 1.
