Applied Math holds first graduate mini-conference

On Friday, 24 January 2025, the Department of Applied Mathematics held its first graduate mini-conference. The one-day event featured 14 talks by graduate students with representation from each of the five research areas of the department. The members of the organizing committee were: Khush Bhavsar, Florian Girelli, Vyom Patel, José Polo-Gómez, and María Rosa Preciado-Rivas.

Prizes were awarded to the best three presenters, determined by popular vote from the audience. The winners were:

  1. Maliha Ahmed (supervised by Sue Ann Campbell), From Synapses to Networks: Modeling Seizure Resolution in Absence Epilepsy
  2. Hassaan Qazi (supervised by Roberto Guglielmi), Impulsive Optimal Control Strategies in Pest Management
  3. Jiayue Yang (supervised by Rob Mann), From black hole thermodynamics to black hole chemistry
