Applied Mathematics members Professor Marek Stastna, Professor Francis Poulin, and Dr. Alain Gervais organized the inaugural Quantitative Climate Science (QCS) summer school at the University of Waterloo, July 21-25, 2025. This event included a series of six QCS seminars held over three days with guest speakers from Environment and Climate Change Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada, workshops, and networking opportunities for undergraduate and graduate trainees.
The QCS program, funded by the NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) grant “Training for novel approaches in quantitative climate science,” is headquartered in Applied Math at the University of Waterloo, with co-PIs from other departments as well as the University of Toronto, McGill University, and Dalhousie University.
“Overall, the CREATE summer school was a great experience!” said Jacob Lessard, an undergraduate student participant. “It helped me learn about different ongoing areas of research in quantitative climate sciences, added to my research skillset, and it allowed meet new people with similar interests. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to do it!”
PhD student Leonard Korreshi commented that “the CREATE summer school was a wonderful opportunity to meet peers from across Canada. The talks were quite enriching, providing not only interesting subject matter but also perspectives on why we do research. I found it very useful to attend.”
