James Petrie places a high premium on intellectual freedom. After graduating with a degree in Engineering Physics from the University of British Columbia (UBC), he accepted a position as a firmware engineer for a leading multinational technology company. “A few months in, I realized I was missing the opportunity to view problems through a wider lens and pursue the things that interested me most,” he remembers.

Yinan Li (PhD ‘19) wis one of two students to take home the coveted Huawei Prize for Best Research paper by a Mathematics Graduate Student. The $4,000 award recognizes the impact of Li’s novel approach to controlling the cyber-physical systems that play an increasingly visible role in modern life through technologies like unmanned air vehicles, autonomous cars, and surgical robots.

Christopher Lang was a nominee for a 2019 Jessie W.H. Zou Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research.

Andrew Giuliani (PhD ’18) was one of six students who won the 2019 Huawei Prize for Best Research Paper by a Mathematics Graduate Student. This award recognizes the impact of his paper, A moment limiter for the discontinuous Galerkin method on unstructured triangular meshes, with a prize of $4,000.
