The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is delighted to welcome Leigh McDermott, Director of City Utilities, Integrated Planning & Public Works, in the City of Waterloo as the 2026 Douglas Wright Engineer-in-Residence.

Dr. Reinhold Schuster, a leader in cold-formed steel (CFS) engineering, was awarded the Alfred F. Wong Lifetime Achievement Award for his transformative contributions to CFS education, research, and standards development. His work, including harmonizing North American steel standards and advancing sustainable practices, has shaped the industry and inspired generations of engineers.

Daniel Rust  a fourth year Architectural Engineering student, is offering a $2000 Trades Scholarship to a student pursuing a career in the skilled trades sector. Rust, who is in his final few terms of his Architectural Engineering degree, also founded and operates Capstone Painting.

Civil, Architectural, Geological, Environmental Engineering Capstone Design Symposium

Alumni, students, employers, industry partners, media, and members of the general public are invited to join us in Pearl Sullivan Engineering for the Civil, Architectural, Geological, Environmental Engineering Capstone Design Symposium.

Monday, February 28, 2022 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)

CPI Talk - Are we ready for the quantum era?

Are you interested in quantum mechanics or cryptography?

Then check out CPI's next event on Feb 28th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Learn how quantum computers can create security risks and how we can mitigate them!

CPI's Michele Mosca and Sara Zafar Jafarzadeh discuss why it is important to act now, even though cryptographically-relevant quantum computers are not available.

Capstone goes online in Spring 2020! Prof. Adil Al-Mayah and Prof. Nadine Ibrahim are teaching the Fourth Year Civil Engineering Design Project - Phase 1 (CIVE 400) this term, and wanted to thank all faculty who are serving as technical advisors. There are 32 teams in total, all of whom have found technical advisors to support and offer guidance to their design projects. A number of groups are working on modular construction of hospitals and clinics - motivated by the present situation! Here's a photo collage of some of the groups in the first meeting on Teams. All smiles so far!

Civil, Environmental & Geological Engineering Capstone Design Symposium

Civil Engineering Capstone Design Project

There will be lots to discover and explore at Civil, Environmental & Geological Engineering's Capstone Design Symposium. Dozens of projects will display everything from local transportation issues to the colonization of Mars.

For more information on all the research projects that will be presented, please see the 2019 Civil, Environmental & Geological Engineering Capstone Design Projects page and join us on March 18 to come and explore for yourself! Students will be present from 1:00 pm until 4:30 pm to show and discuss their research.

The next big innovation to hit the marketplace could be among the Waterloo student projects on display at the annual Capstone Design symposia beginning March 16.

Senior-year engineering students at Waterloo will exhibit projects ranging from a technology that reduces agricultural water waste through intelligent irrigation systems to a device that may help people with Parkinson`s disease avoid falls.
