Two Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) graduate students from the University of Waterloo returned from Italy with international recognition after participating in the 15th Asia-Pacific-Euro Summer School on Smart Structures Technology (APESS) and the 17th ANCRiSST Workshop at Politecnico di Torino.

The University of Waterloo’s ITE student chapter has won the 2026 Outstanding Student Chapter Award, marking its third straight win after a strong post-pandemic comeback.

Led largely by undergraduates and with a more diverse membership, the chapter has grown through community-building, creative events, and strong industry connections. It’s now recognized as a leading student organization in transportation.

University of Waterloo Civil and Environmental Engineering students earned third place at the CSCE National Capstone Competition for a unique project tackling invasive species in the Kawartha Lakes. Their turbulent velocity barrier combined fluid dynamics modeling with ecological design, showcasing the power of interdisciplinary engineering. The achievement highlights both technical excellence and the perseverance behind five years of study, marking a strong finish to their undergraduate journey.

LikWid Assets won the 2025–26 CWRA Student Design Competition, earning a second consecutive victory with an innovative water resources solution. The growing competition, supported by AECOM, continues to highlight top student talent and saw increased participation this year.

Jonathan Silverman, a University of Waterloo civil engineering student, has plotted out Ontario’s odd highway histories on a new online map.

Professor Solomon Tesfamariam of the University of Waterloo’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has received the 2025 Engineering Structures Best Paper of the Year Award for his research on the reliability of timber columns under fire conditions, co-authored with Tongchen Han. The international award recognizes the paper’s innovation, rigor, and impact on safer, more resilient timber construction.

A fourth‑year environmental engineering capstone project reached a wider audience through its feature in Ontario Out of Doors.
