Cultivating acceptance is an important skill and a key part of navigating challenging times. Accepting something simply means “taking a stance of non-judgmental awareness, as well as actively embracing our thoughts, feelings, and body sensations as they occur” (Psychology Today).
Acceptance is not the same as condoning (or approving of) a situation or event. Accepting that things are what they are provides us with a starting point from which to make decisions or changes. Radical acceptance is a skill taught in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), an effective tool for getting unstuck. See the Positive Psychology website for more information on how you can use radical acceptance as a tool for navigating challenging times.
