ECE UG Wellness Representative Program | Engineering Wellness Program

The goal of this program is to help monitor and enhance the well-being of Electrical and Computer Undergraduate Engineering students in an organic, peer-supported manner. This is done not only by championing wellness initiatives and promoting wellness strategies, but also by encouraging interactions with your peers that would occur organically anyways.

Roles/Specializations

There will be two main streams of UG wellnes reps: front-facing and back-end. The front-facing wellness reps will be more interpersonal focused, completing task that involve person to person communication and support skills. Some of the tasks that front-facing UG wellness reps would complete include presenting on wellness topics, supporting peers, deescalating, interpersonal communication skills, etc. The back-end wellness reps include a more administrative, problem solving focus on tasks that include serving on committees, surveying/data collection, event planning, developing proposals for executive consideration, etc. Although there are two main streams of wellness reps, there is a large amount of freedom for those who wish to be involved in both. For those who wish to begin in a more back-end role and eventually work your way to a front-facign role, there will be training available to help you do so! The two streams are by no means the only way you can fit into the wellness reps team.

Generally, what would the role include?

As a UG Wellness Rep, you would help ENGWellness by keeping us informed with what is going on in your program, as well as helping us run programs and initiatives to better support you and your peers. Peers could come to you for support and direction to any necessary resources!

Wellness Reps would work with the Student Wellness Coordinator (Leah Foster), our ENGWellness co-op students, as well as other Wellness Reps in other departments.

Primary Duties

As a UG Wellness Rep, you can expect to:

Serve as an advocate for wellness in the Faculty of Engineering and point of contact for students looking to access wellness related support and resources.
Work with student-directed teams to help raise awareness and educate on student wellness issues.
Facilitate wellness-related events in your department and the Faculty of Engineering.
Serve as a positive role model for student wellness at UW!

Time Commitments

Time commitments are flexible! We know that Engineering students are busy, and so, scheduling will be based on your schedule! It will be determined in advance with the Student Wellness Coordinator. Ongoing, check-in meetings with the Student Wellness Coordinator and other Wellness Reps may be required on an approximately weekly/bi-weekly basis.

Further, optional training will be available for all of those interested in becoming Wellness Reps!

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for class leaders who demonstrate an interest in learning about physical and mental health and well-being! It would help to have experience with roles involving social interactions with others, a willingness to learn, and an interest in student well-being!

Benefits of Participating

Wellness Reps will be provided opportunities to be trained in relevant health and wellness topics and will be expected to learn and practice skills as a peer helper and a student leader. Some of these topics include sexual health, consent, sexual assault, mental/physical health, academic supports/resources, supporting students in distress, and suicide prevention.

Skills strengthened may include active listening, boundary setting, professional vs. personal interactions, customer service, and more.

You will also be helping your peers have a positive experience at the university, in spite of these uncertain times.
