Carrie Synder has a BA in English Literature with a minor in Peace and Conflict Studies and an MA in English Literature. Carrie fell in love with words around the age of five. First, a reader. Not long after that, she knew that she wanted to be a writer, most particularly of fiction, and she has spent the better part of her working toward that end. Her first published poems were written when she was still in high school. She studied English literature in university, read anything and everything, and landed her first real job in the books section of the National Post newspaper, all while developing and practicing the craft of writing.
Her first book, Hair Hat, a collection of stories, was published by Penguin Canada in 2004. Her second, The Juliet Stories, a novel-in-stories, was published by House of Anansi in 2012, and was a finalist for the Governor-General’s Award for Fiction that same year. Her third book and first novel, Girl Runner, will be published in Canada in 2014 and in 2015 in the US, the UK, and in translation in a number of languages. She has also published poetry, creative non-fiction, and worked as a copy editor and freelance journalist. Her first book for children—a picture book—will be published by Owl Kids in 2015.
As a teacher, she aims to offer an insider's view on all aspects of the publishing process, and to create a classroom environment that welcomes, inspires, and challenges all participants to create and share new work. She lives in Waterloo with her husband and four children, and blog as Obscure CanLit Mama.
