Decolonizing Research Methodologies for Sustainability

The Faculty of Environment invites you to attend a special Speakers Series on Decolonizing Research Methodologies for Sustainability.

The fourth, and final, session will be featuring Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith on February 22nd from 2:00 - 3:30 pm.

Following the Speaker presentation, Student Teaching Excellence Committee (STEC) will share information about post-talk interactive reflection sessions.

Speakers will share their unique approaches to decolonizing research, and how they conduct research that is inclusive, mindful of local cultural practices and sensitive to diverse research contexts. Among participants, we will collectively explore the meaning of decolonization as it pertains to sustainability research; to re-think our approach to and purpose of research; and to explore ways to design and conduct Respectful Research.

This speaker series is organized as part of a student-led initiative and sponsored by STEC.

About Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith

Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous Peoples

Professor Linda Tuhiwai Smith is a Maori researcher and Distinguised Professor at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, a tertiary institution that provides education in a Māori cultural context. She has worked in the field of Māori education and health for many years as an educator and researcher and is well known for her work in Kaupapa Māori research. She is widely known for her ground-breaking book, Decolonizing Methodologies: Research and Indigenous Peoples (Zed Books, 1999 and 2012) which has sparked a major turn in perspectives on research, methodologies and colonialism.
