Congratulations to Satveer Kaur Dhillon, PhD candidate in the Department of Geography and Environmental Management, on receiving the Student Presentation Award at the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) Ontario Division Conference.

The CAGONT 2024 Conference, a key event across Canada and internationally, provides a platform for researchers at all career stages to share their work and learn from one another, held at Toronto Metropolitan University on November 1 and 2. The event brought together early career researchers, professors, and scholars from around the world, providing an invaluable space for sharing new research, fostering academic dialogue and inspiring future collaborations in the field of geography. This year’s conference was special as it was part of a larger celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies Geographic Analysis program.

In Toronto, Dhillon was recognized for her research presentation, Aging with HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review.  Dhillon’s research emphasizes the urgent need for tailored policies and programs to address older adults’ unique health, social and economic challenges.

“This recognition is an affirmation of the importance of presenting research to diverse audiences and fostering understanding to create meaningful change,” says Dhillon. “It motivates me to continue pursuing research that can influence policy and practice, especially for marginalized populations.”

Dhillon’s journey in the field of health geography began in 2018 when she joined the Environment’s Geographies of Health in Place (GoHelP) Lab, where she is now a first-year PhD student.  Her experience in the lab not only shaped her research interests but also inspired her ongoing commitment to studying aging and health in sub-Saharan Africa.
