Three researchers from the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Environment have been awarded funding from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to work with the community to investigate the lack of family-sized apartment housing despite the recent building boom in the Region of Waterloo.

Jeremy Pittman, a professor of Planning in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, was recently appointed as a member of new federal Nature Advisory Committee (NAC), created by Environment and Climate Change Canada to foster ways for Canadians to engage positively with our natural environment.

Meet the eight inspiring individuals representing the Faculty of Environment’s newest grads at this spring’s in-person convocation. We congratulate the 2022 award recipients and wish them the best in their future endeavours.

On July 1, Professor Bruce Frayne will begin his tenure as the new dean of the Faculty of Environment for a five-year term. Prior to his appointment, Frayne was a tenured, full professor at the University of Waterloo serving a second term as the Director of the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development in the Faculty of Environment.

Environment does it different

On Thursday May 12, 2022, the Faculty of Environment held the first in-person General Assembly in over two years. The assembly received an entertaining annual report presentation from all the departments, attributed to Dean Jean Andrey’s goal for a creative spin on the classic reports.

Three students of the Faculty of Environment dominated this year’s winter term Social Impact Showcase organized by St. Paul’s University College GreenHouse by winning three out of the nine ventures that pitched for the coveted awards.

The student of Environment, Resources and Sustainability at the Faculty of Environment, Emma Schuster with other five women have been recognized as 2021 University of Waterloo Co-op Students of the Year.

A recent publication, co-authored by Dawn Parker of the Environment’s School of Planning and Waterloo’s Institute for Complexity and Innovation, reveals 10 facts that help explain the fundamental challenges of achieving sustainability in land use, and point toward solutions.
