Year: 4

Stream of study: Co-op

Favourite co-op: Land Development Planning Student for Drewlo Holdings Inc. This was my favourite co-op job as I was given the opportunity to explore the residential development industry in Ontario.

Are you involved in any campus clubs?

I am involved in a few sport and social clubs such as basketball, flag football, and muay thai. I am looking to get more involved in clubs related to my program and the environment in my final year.

Why did you choose to study in the Faculty of Environment at Waterloo?

I chose the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo as it is home to just 1 of 2 accredited Planning programs in Ontario. I really found value in having up to 20 months of paid co-op experience, as this gave me a chance to explore my interests and passions. Waterloo's world-renowned co-op program was the biggest deciding factor for me coming to the school and it has been the best decision I've made! It also feels good to be a part of a forward-thinking faculty that is working to make the world a more sustainable place.

What do you love most about your program?

One thing I love most about Planning is the wide range of specializations such as transportation planning, land development planning, urban design, and more. The various specializations all work to solve their own problems through interdisciplinary approaches.

What problem would you like to solve?

A major problem that I would like to solve as a future Planner is addressing the need for more quality, affordable, and sustainable housing throughout Ontario. Canada's real estate market has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years, with high demands for housing, but not enough supply to keep up. This has resulted in a very competitive market which can be overwhelming for new grads, first-time home buyers, and young families. As a future land development planner, I hope to increase the supply of quality, affordable, and sustainable housing in Ontario. I hope to also be able to collaborate with industry stakeholders to make progressive policy changes that work towards increasing our housing supply.
