Environment, Resources and Sustainability

Year: 3

Stream of study: Co-op

Career goal: I would love to work as a Sustainable Development Officer one day.

Why did you choose to study in the Faculty of Environment at Waterloo?

The Faculty of Environment was an easy choice for me to make as it was one of only a few universities in the country that had a whole faculty dedicated to driving sustainability and solving environmental problems. I knew Waterloo was also the place for me as in my first term, I already got to start taking courses that I’m interested in and apply directly to my program, such as the ENVS 195: Introduction to Environment Studies. I didn’t have to worry about taking very general first year classes that wouldn’t be necessary for my degree.

What do you love most about your program?

I love the variety of paths my program has and how two people with different interests would both enjoy Environment, Resources and Sustainability (ERS). In ERS, there is a focus of ecology as well as environment policy, and you can choose to focus in one or both. For me, I enjoy environmental policy, but I have many friends in the program who mostly focus on ecology. Although we have different focuses, we both still love the program and all its options.

What problem would you like to solve?

I would like to work on solving the problem of environmental injustice by developing political measures to reverse the disproportionate impacts many low-income, racialized communites face in Canada. My program will help me achieve this goal by taking courses that will allow me to understand the causes and impacts to this problem as well as the various methods to approach a solution.
