FAUW is looking for 2–5 volunteers to join a working group with a mandate to make recommendations to the FAUW Board of actions that can be taken to ensure the interests of the FAUW membership and other pension stakeholders are defended and upheld in the context of proposed governance changes to existing pension committees and the proposed transition to the University Pension Plan (UPP).

FAUW is looking for 1-2 volunteers to join a small committee thinking about how to further improve UW budget reporting to make it easier to “follow the money” and help increase faculty members’ basic understanding and ability to engage with the University’s financial situation.

The Teaching Stream Faculty (formerly Lecturers') Committee advises the FAUW Board on matters pertaining to the working conditions of teaching stream faculty.

Teaching stream faculty fill diverse roles within the University that are distinct from those of professorial-rank faculty and thus have distinct needs. The committee, which has representation from all faculties, is particularly concerned with the career paths of teaching stream faculty, including terms and conditions of employment, teaching loads, and progression.

This committee is currently seeking 1 member for a 2-year term beginning July 1, 2025:

  • 1 member from Science

FAUW Board of Directors seats up for election:

  • 4 at-large directors, for a 2-year term
  • 1 teaching stream director, for a 2-year term
  • 1 Mathematics director, for a 1-year term

All terms begin July 1, 2025.

The Online Teaching Award (OTA) and Online Course Design Award (OCDA) evaluation committee member will:

  • Review nomination packages in advance of the committee meeting at the end of April, referring to a rubric that aligns with the Teaching Effectiveness Framework, to shortlist 3 candidates for each award (approx. 1-3 hours per nominee)
  • Review the courses shortlisted for the OCDA in LEARN (I will arrange for access to shortlisted courses for all committee members).
  • Complete two Qualtrics surveys summarizing their thoughts about each of the nominees they reviewed
  • Attend a 2-hr evaluation committee meeting in late April or early May to select the award recipients

What's involved?

Providing procedural support at (at least) two annual general meetings, one in April and one in December. Each meeting is about 2 hours long (sometimes two hours). The meeting dates for this term are December 4, 2025 and April 8, 2026.

Parliamentarians should have a strong understanding of meeting procedures in general and Roberts Rules, specifically.

At the University of Waterloo, our Research Data Management (RDM) Institutional Strategy responds to the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy, which mandates that all institutions must have an institutional RDM strategy by March 2023. The “agencies believe that research data collected through the use of public funds should be responsibly and securely managed and be, where ethical, legal and commercial obligations allow, available for reuse by others.” There is one FAUW seat open on the RDM Institutional Strategy Working Group for 1 year beginning January 1, 2025.

FAUW is seeking 1 additional member to join a standing committee that will research issues related to salary and compensation, to support and inform the negotiating team.

Graduate student supervision requires complex interaction between graduate students and the graduate supervisor. Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs (GSPA), in collaboration with the Graduate Student Association (GSA), established this award to recognize exemplary faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in graduate student supervision, through being a mentor, advisor, role model, humanist and a strategist who exemplifies a high level of energy and ingenuity. Normally, three faculty members will be recognized annually.

We are looking for 2 members, a primary and a back-up, in case there is a conflict of interest.

The Academic Freedom & Tenure Committee (AF&T) helps faculty members with workplace problems.

These problems range from the application of University policy or the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), to concerns about tenure, promotion, and performance reviews.

Applications for this committee will be considered as they're received.
