Dr. Oliver Schneider is Seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher for the Haptic Experience (HX) Lab!

Friday, February 10, 2023

The Haptic Experience (HX) Lab is seeking a post-doctoral scholar to assist with a variety of projects involving haptics, physical interactive technology, and human-computer interaction. There is a great deal of flexibility in the topic, as the post-doc will be able to manage existing projects while having the opportunity to further their own research agenda. There will be ample opportunity for student mentorship, grant writing, and lab management experience in addition to core research activities.

The ideal candidate will have an excellent track record of research and publication in HCI, haptics, or related fields, and a passion for the topics of research covered by the HX Lab. Knowledge of at least one of the following topics is required, with knowledge of more than one area highly preferable:

  • Human-computer interaction (HCI), especially involving tangible/physical/haptic interaction, user experience, affective computing, and/or evaluation of interactive systems
  • Haptics, including haptics technology (actuators, sensors, control loops), haptics science (psychophysics, perception, cognition, neuroscience), and/or haptics interaction (applications, haptic design, hardware/software prototyping)
  • Machine learning, ML ops, and data science, especially technologies like autoencoders, generative algorithms, human computation/crowdsourcing, and/or data mining
  • Computer science, especially programming language theory and implementation, compilers, or end-user software engineering
  • Design, including design methods and design research, creativity-support tools, and/or design justice
  • Quantitative methodologies, including statistics, experimental design, user studies, quantitative modelling, and/or scale development
  • Qualitative methodologies, including grounded theory, phenomenology, and/or other types of qualitative methods

Applications will be reviewed starting on January 15, 2023 and will be reviewed on a continual basis until filled. We especially encourage scholars from equity-seeking groups to apply. Decisions will be made based primarily on research potential, as well as a fit with lab topics. Pay will be commensurate with experience, Waterloo guidelines for post-doctoral funding, and likelihood to obtain external fellowships (e.g., NSERC fellowshipsWaterloo AMTD fellowship). The expected duration is 2 years, but there may be an option to extend.

To apply, email Oliver Schneider (oliver.schneider@uwaterloo.ca) with "[Post-doc at the HX Lab]" in the email title. Include:

  • a CV,
  • research statement (as an attachment or in the body of the email) explaining past research and;
  • plans for the future (max 4 pages), and any information about timeline.
