Using Virtual Reality To Help Older Adults

Friday, March 16, 2018

As a Master’s candidate in Systems Design Engineering, and researcher at the Games Institute, Mahzar Eisapour teamed up with the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging and exercise therapist Laura Domenicucci to design an alternate world for people with dementia.

This VR project provides older adults with the opportunity to access individualized exercise opportunities. Working with a small sample of Wentworth Heights residents, Mahzar and the other collaborators are hoping to design an exercise program that will address the needs, abilities and interests of the target demographic they are hoping will use it. The exercises facilitated by this program involve a focus on range of motion. The goal is to carry the research forward so that it positively impacts the older adults that will use these tools and resources.
