Optical precursors: From fundamentals to applications

Optical precursors are transient electromagnetic wave packets propagating precisely at the speed of light in vacuum through a dispersive and absorptive dielectric. Even though its existence was conjectured by Sommerfeld and Brillouin 100 years ago, the detection seemed to be impossible due to its exceedingly small amplitude and femtosecond time scale in ordinary linear dispersive media.

Beams of light, atoms, neutrons and electrons can carry orbital angular momentum parallel to their propagation axis. Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) waves have demonstrated a number of applications in microscopy, encoding and multiplexing of communications, and manipulation of matter. In addition, coupling a two-level system to beams carrying OAM permits a wealth of new applications.

Majorana zero mode inside vortex core of topological superconductors

In this talk, I will discuss Majorana zero mode inside vortex core of topological super- conductors, which has recently been observed in experiments. The spin polarized scanning tunneling microscope (STM) shows spin dependent tunneling conductance, which is attributed to spin selective Andreev reflection of the Majorana zero mode inside the vortex.

In a recent survey, nearly 1 in 3 Americans said they would rather clean a toilet than do a single math problem. Tell someone on the street that you are a physicist, or worse, a mathematician, and you’ll be acknowledged with a “I hated math in school” or “I was never any good at math.” Tell them you are a quantum physicist and you’ll be lucky if you get a response. Chris Ferrie plans to vanquish those doubts and fears by introducing children to quantum physics. But, how young is too young? Enter Quantum Physics for Babies.

Active beam splitting attack applied to coherent-state based QKD protocols

We consider a new type of attack on a coherent state-based quantum key distribution protocols (like coherent one-way (COW) or differential phase-shift (DPS) protocol). The main idea of the attack consists in measuring individually the intercepted states and sending the rest of them unchanged. In some cases, this attack can be considered as a generalization of well-known beam-splitting attack and unambiguous state discrimination attack.
