Member Spotlight : Prof. Boxin Zhao Named Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering for Advances in Functional Materials

Congratulations to Professor Boxin Zhao on being elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE)!

This prestigious honour recognizes Professor Zhao’s outstanding contributions to engineering research, innovation, and real-world impact. A faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering and a researcher with the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN), he is internationally known for his work in advanced functional materials, including surface science, biomimetic adhesion, and smart polymers.

His research has led to stimuli-responsive materials with applications in soft robotics, flexible electronics, and manufacturing, including UV-activated hydrogels that bond underwater for infrastructure repair. He has also developed nanotechnology solutions to address environmental challenges such as nano- and microplastic pollution.

Through EverBond Interface Technologies, Professor Zhao has advanced the commercialization of sustainable innovations, including PFAS-free coatings and antimicrobial technologies. He will be formally inducted as a CAE Fellow at the Academy’s annual meeting in Edmonton on June 1.
