Dr. Duane Cronin has received a Safety Engineering Excellence Award from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the 28th International Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety Vehicles (ESV) in Toronto on May 12, 2026, for his commitment to advancing road safety.
The International Network of Sustainable Nanotechnology (N4SNano) is a global force for industry, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations to champion nanotechnology solutions for sustainable futures, and Dr. Sushanta Mitra is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering and the Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology (WIN), which also happens to be a founding partner of this network. Together, Mitra and the team in N2SNano are working together to bring the brightest minds in environmental preservation for a conference on sustainability that benefits communities all over the world.
Connor Pryce, a 4A MME student, led the research that won the Student Poster Competition at the 2024 American Physical Society’s Division of Fluid Dynamics (APS-DFD) conference, the largest international event in Fluid Mechanics—held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Professor Michael Worswick received the Market Development Industry Leadership Award from the American Iron and Steel Institute at their Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., for making significant contributions to the competitive use of advanced and ultra-high-strength steel in the automotive market.
In a dazzling display of innovation at this year's Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards for Capstone Design, senior engineering teams from the Faculty of Engineering brought forth groundbreaking projects to compete for substantial funding to fuel their entrepreneurial dreams. Out of the ten formidable teams, two remarkable groups from the Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering (MME) stream notably clinched victory.
Shanaya Barretto, an incoming MTE student has won a Shulich Leader Scholarship for 2021, valued at $100,000. Barretto graduated from St. Joseph Secondary School.
Congratulations to PhD student Ahmed Saieed for winning the 2021 Graduate Scholarship Award from the CFD Society of Canada. The award is a national-level recognition and was created in 2005 to encourage graduate students to pursue the topic of computational fluid dynamics in their thesis. Each year, up to two students are awarded $4,000 scholarships and applicants must be a full-time Master or PhD student and an active member of the CFDSC.
On March 30th and 31st, MME's 4th-year Capstone Design Symposium events were held virtually and showcased our latest and greatest in terms of talent and innovation. This year, there were over 100+ senior teams showcasing their projects and competing for a selection of awards from best product design, web design, prototype, inovation, presention quality etc. Below are the results and conclusions of this year's award winners.
