One, two, three. It takes just three seconds for a new case of Alzheimer’s to develop worldwide. As of 2015, Alzheimer’s affects nearly 50 million patients and has a global economic cost of $820 billion. In Canada alone, about 1 million patients suffer from this devastating disorder. In short, Alzheimer’s is a cureless, debilitating, and costly disease.

Paul Malik, Rx 2016, won the 2016 Glaxo-Smith-Kline National Undergraduate Student Research Award. His poster, “Using Population PBPK Modelling to Explore Variability in Trastuzumab Pharmacokinetics”, conveyed focused and complex research, and Paul rendered that information in an accessible and engaging way for the audience.

On Mar 22, the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy welcomed back recent alumni for the first ever New Grad Panel, a Pharmacist Awareness Month (PAM) event. The Panel, organized by PAM Chair Heidi Fernandes and Jr CAPSI Rep Monique Eisa, featured recent graduates representing a diverse cross-section of pharmacy practice. It took a question and answer approach where the new grads talked  pharmacy life with current students.

On Sunday March 13, the Waterloo School of Pharmacy welcomed the University of Toronto Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy to our city. UofT Pharmacy joined us for the annual Ontario Pharmacist Association Cup, one of many student-organized events during Pharmacist Awareness Month 2016.

Dr. Spagnuolo made headlines worldwide last year for ground-breaking research on the use of avocado-derived molecules in combating acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). AML is a devastating disease that proves fatal within five years for 90 percent of seniors who are diagnosed with it.
