As Alzheimer’s disease continues to impact more and more Canadians, the need for novel therapies and therapeutic drugs is greater than ever. Using a state-of-the-art technology to discover new therapies to treat Alzheimer’s disease is among the projects receiving funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI), announced today.

Like many other tools, sometimes prescription drugs can be used for more than one purpose. University of Waterloo scientists and industry partner Cyclica discovered that a commonly known antidepressant may be useful in fighting some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

Spring brings many highly anticipated arrivals – more sunlight, warmer temperatures, fresh blossoms – and, in our case, distinguished guests from Brisbane, Australia. In mid-March, the School of Pharmacy was honoured to welcome guests Dr. Esther Lau and Dr. Manuel Serrano Santos from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Australia. QUT is redeveloping its pharmacy program, so this globe-trotting pair of course co-ordinators travelled to Kitchener to exchange curriculum design ideas with our faculty.

The School of Pharmacy’s first CanBuild team collected a whopping 566 food items for CanBuild 2015, the University of Waterloo’s annual food drive.Volunteers created a life-size dispensary and called their initiative “Beyond the Counter”. Their aim was to raise awareness about hunger and how pharmacists can improve nutrition in our communities.
