Discovering opportunity and community through the SAF Fellowship Program

When I started university, I was excited to get involved with my community but had no idea how many opportunities existed within the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF). Now, as a second-year student, I can confidently say that joining the SAF Fellowship Program has been one of the best decisions I’ve made at Waterloo.

One of my favourite parts of the program has been the mentorship experience. I was paired with my alumni mentor, Ioana Balta, and our conversations have been incredibly fun, insightful, and meaningful. Ioana shared her SAF journey, giving me valuable insight into various career paths, including the possibility of pursuing a PhD one day.

The Fellowship Program has also offered some amazing professional opportunities. A standout moment was attending an event with KPMG Canada's CEO, Benjie Thomas (PD'Acc 98). As someone now completing my co-op at KPMG, this was certainly a surreal full-circle moment to meet him first as a student and later reconnect with him at the firm. Experiences like this remind me how many doors SAF and the Fellowship Program can open.

Beyond the academic and professional aspects, the program has also been truly enjoyable. Social events like the board game café night and the bowling social helped me meet other Fellows and build friendships outside of class.

During my first year at SAF, I became a School of Accounting and Finance Outreach and Ambassador Program ambassador, which is a role that I've continued as part of my Fellowship involvement. I loved volunteering at open houses and speaking on panels, as it’s been a rewarding way to give back and highlight the exciting opportunities that SAF has to offer.

Looking back, I’m so grateful I took the leap and joined the Fellowship Program. It has helped me grow, connect with incredible people, and make the most of my time in SAF. I’m excited to see what the next few years bring.
