Early this year, a team of students from the University of Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) competed at the Queen’s Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC). This year’s team featured three Accounting and Financial Management students: Kai R. (AFM 3B), Michael Z. (AFM 3B), and John Y. (AFM 4B).
ICBC is a fast-paced competition that challenges students to solve complex business problems under tight timelines. Over the course of one day, the team completed a five-hour case and developed a strategic recommendation supported by both qualitative and quantitative analysis.
The competition tested their ability to quickly identify key issues, evaluate alternatives, and build a clear, practical solution.
Following the case period, the team presented their recommendation to industry and academic professionals during a judging session, where they were challenged on both the rationale behind their strategy and the feasibility of its execution. The experience provided valuable insight into how effective business strategy depends not only on strong analysis, but also on the ability to communicate and defend ideas under pressure.
The SAF team placed second overall and left the competition with a strong result and valuable experience. The students are proud of what they accomplished and are excited for Waterloo to return even stronger next year!
