CARE secures renewal: Celebrating excellence in accounting research

Friday, March 28, 2025

The Centre for Accounting Research and Education (CARE) continues to drive innovation in accounting research and education. We are pleased to announce that its renewal application has been officially approved by the Senate Graduate and Research Council—securing another five years of excellence.

Blake Phillips, current director of the School of Accounting and Finance (SAF), presented the application and received a unanimous decision in favour of the renewal. This milestone reaffirms CARE’s impact on accounting research, education and professional practice.

The renewal acknowledges CARE’s four key research centres for their exceptional contributions:

  • Centre for Accounting Ethics

  • Waterloo Centre for Taxation in a Global Economy

  • University of Waterloo Centre for Information Integrity and Information Systems Assurance (UWCISA)

  • CPA Ontario Centre for Sustainability Reporting and Performance Management (CSPM)

These centres have been instrumental in producing groundbreaking research in taxation, sustainability reporting, ethics and information integrity. CARE serves as a catalyst for collaboration, uniting scholars and industry leaders to drive meaningful advancements in accounting and finance.

Since its inception, CARE faculty have contributed over 175 peer-reviewed research papers. In the past six years alone, CARE has secured significant funding for interdisciplinary research projects and PhD students—fostering collaboration across disciplines to tackle critical challenges in accounting and finance together.

Beyond research, CARE has hosted numerous workshops and symposia, facilitating knowledge exchange between academics and leading industry practitioners. These initiatives have strengthened global partnerships, enhanced the practical impact of research and supported both faculty and student research endeavors.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the CARE leadership team, faculty and supporters for their dedication. With this renewal, we look forward to continuing our mission of advancing research, shaping industry best practices and inspiring the next generation of accounting and finance professionals.
