For decades, graduates of the University of Waterloo's Master of Taxation (MTax) program have influenced tax policy, advised leading organizations and become respected leaders across the profession. Now, alumni have a new way to build on that legacy.
Founding member Sam Al Sabery (MTax ’26) moderates a presentation by Richter, engaging with current students to foster connections between alumni and the next generation of tax leaders.
The newly launched MTax Alumni Network brings together graduates from industry, public practice, government and academia to strengthen relationships across the profession and create new opportunities for collaboration, mentorship and knowledge sharing.
Among the network's founding members is Sam Al Sabery (MTax ’26), founder of SAS Accounting Corp., who saw an opportunity to unite professionals with a shared connection to the program.
"Having the top minds in taxation under a united banner was kind of a no-brainer," says Al Sabery. "To me, it's a passion project because I want to ensure that the current generation, the past generation and the future generation have something they can rely on, both professionally and personally."
As the tax profession continues to evolve, bringing together perspectives from across sectors has become increasingly important. The network creates a space for graduates to exchange ideas, share experiences and support one another as they navigate a changing professional landscape.
Ryan Chesser (MTax ’13), Partner at Ernst & Young (EY), was eager to help build the network and contribute to its long-term success.
"One of the greatest strengths of the MTax program has always been its people," says Chesser. "Throughout my career, I've worked with and learned from many MTax graduates across firms and industry. The Alumni Network is an opportunity to strengthen those connections and create something lasting for future graduates. It's an investment in a community that has had a meaningful impact on my own career." Chesser believes the network's value will continue to grow over time, creating lasting connections that support members throughout their careers.
With graduates shaping the tax profession across Canada and beyond, the MTax Alumni Network represents the next chapter of a community built over decades. Rooted in the strength of its people and the lasting connections formed through the program, the network reflects the continued impact of MTax graduates and reinforces Waterloo's leadership in tax education.
