Medication non-adherence is a concern globally, and often occurs unknowingly or by mistake. Dr. Tejal Patel, clinical associate professor at the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy, is trying to improve medication management and assist older adults when taking their medication at home by correctly matching them with new innovative technologies.

Dr. Janusz Pawliszyn received the Chemical Institute of Canada Medal for his outstanding contribution to the science of chemistry in Canada. Sponsored by the Chemical Institute of Chemistry, the CIC Medal is their top award.

A new study is the first to show brain stimulation improves reading in patients with macular degeneration. Drug treatments only slow down the progression of the disease, but Waterloo scientists discovered they could train the brain to use the information it receives more efficiently.

Dr. Pavle Radovanovic won the 2023 Award for Research Excellence in Materials Chemistry from the national Canadian Society for Chemistry. The award acknowledges his outstanding contribution to materials chemistry.

Last week, the Ambassador of France to Canada, Mr. Michel Miraillet, presented five promising female scientists with the L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Fellowship. The awards recognize rising stars of science in Canada, including Dr. Brittney Borowiec, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biology.

The Government of Canada's Environmental Damages Fund, administered by Environment and Climate Change Canada, is allocating $15.8 million to six University of Waterloo research projects to identify solutions to environmental challenges. Two of the projects are led by Waterloo scientists - biologist Dr. Laura Hug and earth scientist Dr. Nandita Basu.

Waterloo's Nobel Laureate Donna Strickland received top honours from Canada and France last week in Ottawa for her contributions to science. She was appointed the Companion of the Order of Canada medal and named a Knight of the Legion of Honour.
