Abeera - Biochemistry

Science Ambassador

Program: Biochemistry

Year: 2nd

Stream of study: Co-op

Pronouns: She/Her

Career goal: Either research, medicine, or working at a biotech company. I'm still exploring my interests.

How I get involved: In the past, I have volunteered with Let's Talk Science Outreach to share my passion for science with high school students within the region. I was also the first-year representative of the Biochemistry Students' Association, a club that hosts several social and academic events to foster connections with science students.

Why I love my program

Biochemistry is a fascinating interdisciplinary field that enables me to acquire fundamental knowledge in biology and chemistry through rigorous coursework and numerous laboratory courses. As I learn foundational concepts in courses like organic chemistry and molecular biology, I get prepared to problem-solve in a lab setting and use this knowledge to answer questions concerning the chemistry of biological systems. I love being able to apply what I learn in class to solve real-world problems. The Biochemistry program is also very hands-on, which prepares me to take the driver's seat in the lab and in my future career.

Why University of Waterloo?

Being able to go to the University of Waterloo was one of the biggest goals for grade 9 me (this is evident from my grade 9 letter stating UW as my dream school). The University of Waterloo has a distinct approach to teaching, implementing, and leading through its one-of-a-kind co-op program, world-renowned teaching faculty, and the research opportunities available on campus. The UW community is really special because everyone wants you to succeed, and they provide a safe, encouraging environment to do so.
