Program: Honours Medicinal Chemistry
Year: 2
Stream of study: Co-op
Pronouns: She/Her
Career goal: My ultimate goal is working in drug design and the medicinal research and development department in pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer, Sanofi, Johnson & Johnson, and more! I'm excited to have a career where I get to be experimenting in a laboratory all day, using chemistry to help change people's lives for the better.
How I get involved: Being a science ambassador, I am excited to meet so many younger students and get them excited for a career in the sciences. Having helped at Open House last year, I am dedicated to help others in finding their path in the sciences. I'll be at the Medicinal Chemistry booth for Open House, and I will be there answering all the questions I can about my degree, differences in all chemistry degrees, and in general, guiding anyone towards the right degree for them. As a chemistry-lover, I know what its like to feel sure about my degree decisions, and I am hoping to help other student achieve that same satisfaction!
Why I love my program
I love all the laboratory courses I take, and the early specialization in my degree. All my courses are so applicable to my career goals, as they are all chemistry-based, and I enjoy what I learn in every class. Organic chemistry is my favorite, and I am really happy I found something that lets me specialize this fast in the field so early in my career journey. I love that I get co-op integrated within my degree, as I love applying the knowledge I learn in my program into the practical industry outside of class!
Why University of Waterloo?
The University of Waterloo was the only university that gave me co-op and a highly specialized chemistry program in the field I wanted. Knowing I wanted to learn about the pharmaceutical side of chemistry and doing laboratory experiments, I knew that the University of Waterloo would be an excellent choice in giving me courses that I actually enjoy, like organic and analytical chemistry, and giving me amazing opportunities to work alongside my degree with co-op. Having co-op integrated within my degree, I get an education in class that prepares me greatly, not only for further education, but also industry laboratory standards.
