Program: Honours Biology Major, Biotechnology Specialization

Year: 3rd

Stream of study: Regular

Pronouns: She/Her

Career goal: I hope to pursue a career in the biotechnology industry, where I can combine my love for environmental science and biotechnology to make a meaningful impact. My dream is to work in a role that connects biotechnology with ecology, biodiversity conservation, and environmental sustainability.

How I get involved: Besides being a Science Ambassador, I’m part of the Off-Campus Community as a don, where I help create a welcoming and supportive environment for students who don’t live in residence. I’m also a member of the Archery Club, and I enjoy attending events hosted by various clubs across campus such as the zoology and science society events. It's a great way to meet people and experience all the opportunities Waterloo has to offer.

Why I love my program

Some things I love about my program are the passion professors bring to their teaching, it makes learning so engaging and inspires you to explore all the different opportunities in the field. The lab components are especially valuable for me as a hands-on learner, seeing concepts in action really helps solidify my understanding. Some of my favorite labs so far have been Intro to Zoology, Human Anatomy and Osteology. I also appreciate how the program lets you explore different areas of science to discover what excites you most. Beyond the classroom, extracurriculars like the Zoology Club and Science Society have helped me connect with other students and build a strong community. Study abroad opportunities such as my time in Costa Rica to study topics such as ecohydrology and geomorphology, gave me unforgettable real-world experiences that deepened my love for science and Waterloo.

Why University of Waterloo?

I chose Waterloo because of the incredible opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. The co-op program allows students to explore career paths and gain valuable work experience, while the EDGE program offers similar hands-on opportunities for those not in co-op. I was also drawn to the wide variety of fascinating courses, the supportive resources available to students, and the chance to study abroad and experience science around the world. On top of academics, I’d heard that Waterloo is a vibrant student city with plenty of fun events and ways to get involved. A big highlight for me was discovering the Earth Sciences Museum. I was mesmerized by how science was brought to life through its exhibits, and it really deepened my excitement about studying here. Looking back, I know I made the right choice choosing Waterloo!
