Yueu is a newly minted Geography and Environmental Management graduate who’s got two immediate goals: To find a job and to visit his parents and siblings who are still in Sudan.
Yueu lived at St. Paul’s from 2008 to 2010, and came here as a World University Service of Canada (WUSC) refugee student. Ask around, and most people know him as a gentle and genuine student who was born in Sudan.
In 1991, when he was four years old, he and his parents and siblings fled to a refugee camp in Kenya because of the second Sudanese civil war. Sudanese troops burnt down villages and took over the area. While in the camp, Yueu applied for a scholarship that allows the brightest students to go to university. He went through a rigorous interview process, and was “lucky enough” to win the scholarship. He found himself in a new country, with a new culture, and new ways.
St. Paul’s is a great community,” Yueu says. “When I lived here, all the students that I stayed with worked together and helped each other. As a new Canadian coming to St. Paul’s first, I got so much help from so many people; they showed me around and explained what to do and what to say in different situations.”
