Yueu lived at St. Paul’s from 2008 to 2010, and came here as a World University Service of Canada (WUSC) refugee student. Ask around, and most people know him as a gentle and genuine student who was born in Sudan.
In the early 2000s, he was forced to leave his home because of the second Sudanese civil war. In a refugee camp in Kenya, he applied for a scholarship that allows the brightest students to go to university, went through a rigorous interview process, and was “lucky enough” to win the scholarship. He found himself in a new country, with a new culture, and new ways.
St. Paul’s is a great community,” Yueu says. “When I lived here, all the students that I stayed with worked together and helped each other. As a new Canadian coming to St. Paul’s first, I got so much help from so many people; they showed me around and explained what to do and what to say in different situations.”
