First year English courses

First-year English classes at uWaterloo are designed to appeal to a wide range of interests. Because most classes are small–with enrolment capped at 30 or 40–you will get to know your instructor well.

The content of 100-level English literature and rhetoric courses varies significantly. We suggest that you choose your courses based on your own interests, because students usually do better in courses that engage them. We have courses in Literature, Rhetoric, Language and Writing, and Thematic areas.

All courses introduce students to key critical concepts and a specific disciplinary vocabulary; students in all courses are taught to write clearly, effectively, and grammatically and to articulate and support positions through reasoned argument.

If you are considering an English major, you should take at least one but preferably two 100-level English courses in first year. Note that not all courses are offered every year.

Here are some examples of first year English courses you can take:

  • Rhetoric in Popular Culture
  • The Superhero
  • Digital Lives
  • The Rebel
  • Global English Literatures
