Mentor positions

Each year, upper-year students have the opportunity to volunteer in the Mentorship Program in one of the following positions:

Head Mentor Responsibilities

  • Send out weekly communications to mentors via email
  • Monitor any relevant Facebook groups
  • Check email account and refer questions to specific department rep or student mentor
  • Ensure scheduling of study sessions for the term
  • Set up meeting with Living Learning Peer Leaders to plan out term and coordinate events for students
  • Submit profile and photo for website
  • Available during Orientation week to give students an introduction to the program

Time Commitment:

  • Approx. 2.5 hours per week
  • 2 days of training(one with Student Success Office and one with Faculty of Health)
  • Available during Orientation week

Department representatives (Public Health Sciences, Kinesiology and Health Sciences, and Recreation and Leisure Studies)

  • Monitoring email daily
  • Send out bi-weekly emails to first year students in department with updates from Mentorship program and from AHSUM if necessary
  • Monitor Facebook group discussions and answer questions for your program.
  • Get course syllabuses for all 1st year classes in program(work with academic mentors) and create a calendar of when students have classes/labs.
  • Organize study sessions for first year department classes
  • Submit profile and photo for website
  • Available during Orientation week to give students an introduction to the program
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Approx. 2 hours per week
  • 2 days of training(one with Student Success Office and one with Faculty of Health)
  • Available during Orientation week

Personal mentor responsibilities

  • Answer first year questions forwarded from department rep or asked in person
  • Monitor Facebook group discussions and answer questions for your program
  • 1 hour bi-weekly of time with students – this could be one on one in a private place or could be with 2 or 3 first year students.
  • Refer students in academic or emotional distress to the appropriate resource
  • Assist with running study sessions/workshops (department and non-department)
  • Coordinate and run a social event in the first month of classes for 1st year students
  • Submit profile and photo for website

Time Commitment:

  • Approx. 2 hour per week
  • 2 days of training(one with Student Success Office and one with Faculty of Health)

 Academic mentor responsibilities

  • Meet with Professor of courses
    • Get syllabus from Professor
  • Lead first year students in a course specific group study
    • This does not mean teach them the content. Bring them together to study and assist them when they have questions that they have attempted to work through together. You can also come up with any exercises or activities that would help them in learning the content.
  • Answer student questions forwarded from department rep or asked in person
  • Refer students in academic or emotional distress to the appropriate resource
  • Submit profile and photo for website
