Colleagues,
It is a privilege and responsibility to know that we are all part of a very special 50-year legacy. This month marked the halfway point in our celebration of Applied Health Sciences' 50th anniversary. We continue to pay homage to the dedicated people—researchers, teachers, staff, students and alumni—that collectively have made Applied Health Sciences what it is today and to celebrate the pioneering spirit of AHS in continuing to lead new conversations of what health and well-being is and can be. As 2018 marks the 50-year milestone for Recreation and Leisure Studies, and the 40th anniversary of what is now the School of Public Health and Health Systems, the party is just getting started with exciting commemorations planned through to spring term across all units.
As we continue our shared quest of improving and protecting health and well-being, I'd like to thank you all for the part you play in making AHS such a special place to work and learn.
I would also like to take the opportunity to wish you a happy, safe and healthy holiday season. I hope that you find time for joy and relaxation with family and friends amongst the many celebrations, activities and commitments that typify this season.
A few notable announcements before we wind down for a well-deserved holiday break:
- A reminder that our facilities will be closed over the holiday. The outside doors to BMH/LHS/LHN/TJB/AHS Expansion Building will be locked at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 22 and reopened at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 (classes start January 3). If there is some reason that you need to enter the building over the holidays, you may sign out a key from the UWaterloo Police.
- We've just released a special anniversary issue of News to You; hard copies will be arriving in mailboxes early in the new year. This year’s theme, AHS: Leading a new conversation, celebrates the Faculty's innovative, multi-disciplinary approaches to addressing complex health challenges since its founding 50 years ago. Alumni Advancement Officer, Karry Kwan, welcomes your comments and feedback.
- Renovations on the second floor of B.C. Matthews Hall are moving swiftly toward completion by the end of December. The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is anticipating moving back to BMH on January 5, pending furniture delivery and installation earlier that week.
- The Teaching Fellows team extends their sincere thanks for your engagement this term. They are in the process of creating the framework for a teaching innovation fund that will launch in Winter 2018. Additionally, they would like to remind you that Waterloo’s 10th annual Teaching and Learning Conference Call for Proposals is now open. Details of both can be found on the Teaching Fellows' website.
- On January 31, we welcome back AHS alumni as they return to campus to share their experiences and offer career insight to current undergraduate students at Career Night Speed Networking. If you know of alumni in inspiring careers who may be interested in participating, contact Karry Kwan.
- A reminder to researchers to disclose your intellectual property (IP) per Policy 73. The Electronic IP Disclosure Form should be completed by January 31, 2018. The questionnaire, which takes no more than 10 minutes to complete, has been designed to facilitate annual collection of IP and commercialization information to meet Policy 73 requirements. If you completed the form last year, you will only need to update it with new information. For faculty members without IP/research commercialization information, the form can be completed in just a couple of minutes. More information is available on the Have you disclosed your IP webpage.
