CHEO, a pediatric hospital in Ottawa, has been over capacity this viral season due to the surge of patients experiencing respiratory viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza and COVID-19. University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy students have stepped up to help to fill clinical roles, thanks to the flexibility and support of their current co-op employers.

Waterloo School of Pharmacy welcomed its newest cohort of PharmD students today, the class of Rx2026.

The new class spent the morning attending orientation where students heard all about the School’s history, the pharmacy profession and what their future at Waterloo Pharmacy holds.

The Women in Pharmacy Leadership (WIPL) Alumni Mentorship Program paired recent alumni who identify as female with working or retired professionals in their field of interest to help them move towards their leadership goals. In this series, the School of Pharmacy will be spotlighting their experiences.

Medication non-adherence is a concern globally, and often occurs unknowingly or by mistake. Dr. Tejal Patel, clinical associate professor at the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy, is trying to improve medication management and assist older adults when taking their medication at home by correctly matching them with new innovative technologies.

A new study has found that although three-quarters of Ontario pharmacists can administer injections “vaccination deserts” do exist, areas with little to no access to pharmacist-administered vaccination sites.

To identify these areas, researchers at the University of Waterloo and Laurentian University mapped regions across Ontario. It was found that most community pharmacists authorized to administer injections are found in the urban region of Southern Ontario, confirming there is a geographic discrepancy.

Rui Su (PharmD’18) is the 2021 School of Pharmacy Alumni Achievement Award recipient. She received the award virtually at our recent CE Saturday event. This award recognizes and celebrates pharmacy alumni who impact the health and well-being of society through professional work and/or public service contribution. Her contributions echo through community pharmacies across Canada.

Alumni Spotlight: Rand Hussein, PhD

Dr. Rand Hussein (BSc, MSc, PhD) is a pharmacist, researcher and a new mom. She finished her PhD this past September at the School of Pharmacy and is currently pursuing her post-doctoral fellowship at the School, under Dr. Nancy Waite’s supervision, with a focus on vaccine hesitancy.
