As spine surgeons and health-care professionals gathered in the white-capped mountains of Whistler, British Columbia, for the Canadian Spine Society’s annual conference earlier this month, many of them heard from University of Waterloo student, Sarah Hardy.
University of Waterloo PhD student, Jackson Tsuji (BSc ’15, PhD ’20), had a poorly growing bacterial sample he wasn’t ready to give up on, which ultimately led to a once-in-a-lifetime finding that could change how scientists view photosynthesis and its origins.
Congratulations to Rebecca Rooney for being awarded the 2024 Leadership Award by Canada’s Invasive Species Centre. The Invasive Species Centre is a hub for collaboration and knowledge sharing, aiming to prevent the introduction and spread of high-risk invasive species in Canada by connecting stakeholders with knowledge and technology.
The STEM With Disabilities project, created by Emma Collington (BSc '19, MSc '22, current PhD student in the Department of Biology) and Samantha Fowler (BSc '19, Science valedictorian), aims to connect people withdisabilities in STEM, and celebrate their achievements and contributions to their fields. The online campaign launched in May 2023 with an ongoing series of interviews showcasing the authentic stories of people with disabilities in STEM.
