Astronomy at Home Series: Unlocking the wonder of the Perseid Meteor Shower

We've all looked up at the night sky from time to time and stared in wonder at the sheer number of twinkling stars piercing through the vast darkness.  We've marveled at the rise of a bright full moon and been awed by the brilliant streak of a falling star.  As we take in the beauty of the cosmos, our curiosity pushes us for a deeper understanding of the various elements that define our galaxy.

nce and Department of Physics & Astronomy are proud to announce a new virtual lecture series, Astronomy at Home, aimed at taking the mystery out of night sky viewing. Created for a UNIVERSE-al audience, our all-ages educational series will help you learn about astronomy from wherever you are.

The first in our series, Unlocking the Wonder of the Perseid Meteor Shower, will feature Victor Arora, lab demonstrator and observatory coordinator at our own Gustav Bakos Observatory. Victor will explain the origin of the Perseids, what to expect as the event progresses, as well as share his favourite astronomy tools and techniques for the best viewing of this annual heavenly spectacle. With a little luck, enthusiasm and Victor's hints and tools, you'll be well on your way to some memorable evenings under the sky during the height of the 2022 shower season (Aug 11-13 2022).

Registrants will receive a zoom link to the August 10th lecture via email just prior to start time.
