Four Science instructors recognized for teaching excellence

Tuesday, April 25, 2023

Teaching the next generation of scientists is a job we take to heart. Our instructors are committed to improving the depth and effectiveness of student learning in the lab, field and classroom.

The Centre for Teaching Excellence recognized two faculty and two student instructors from the Faculty of Science for their teaching excellence.

Earth continuing lecturer Dr. Keith Delaney and pharmacy clinical lecturer Dr. Nardine Nakhla were each awarded the 2023 Distinguished Teaching Award for their long-standing excellence in teaching. Both are also past recipients of the Excellence in Science Teaching Award.

Delaney is a passionate, highly involved instructor who served as the Earth and Environmental Sciences Teaching Fellow for several years. Nakhla is a key member of the School of Pharmacy’s professional practice team, provides experienced-based lectures and lessons in clinical pharmacy.

Recognizing student teachers

Abigale O’Reilly, an undergraduate student in the Department of Chemistry, and Justin Schrier, a Master’s student from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, were both awarded the 2023 Amit and Meena Chakma Award for Exceptional Teaching By a Student.

O’Reilly is recognized for her enthusiasm, capability to create a supportive environment and dedication to teaching. She was the teaching assistant (TA) for CHEM 121L and as a laboratory assistant for CHEM 125L and CHEM 123L.

Schrier, a first time TA, considers that all students come from different learning backgrounds and takes the time to explain concepts in ways that his students can understand. He was the TA for PHYS 111L.

Congratulations to all!
