Student-to-Student: How to Get Involved

Hannah Sesink with King Warrior.

I'm Hannah Sesink, and I’m in my 4A term studying for a Joint Honours in Recreation and Leisure Studies and Social Development Studies (SDS)!

When I arrived at Waterloo, my passion for community pushed me to seek out new opportunities and get involved from the very beginning.

In Full Colour in the Spotlight: A Look at the ICCA Quarterfinal Winners

The In Full Colour acapella team pose for a photograph in Hagey Hall

If you’re not following the world of a capella right now, know one thing: Waterloo’s teams are the ones to look out for. The International Championship of Colligate A Capella (ICCA) Quarterfinal has been covered at length, celebrating the accomplishments and historic feats of Waterloo’s a capella community. Last year, a historic first was set by the Waterboys, the first Canadian team to win the semi-finals. This year, the University swept the competition on home terf – which is the first time the ICCA’s came north — with “In Full Colour” coming up as the quarterfinal winners. So who is this team, and what do they stand for?

Perfecting your pitch

The Water Boys sing their way to historic success

In 2008, eight engineers from the University of Waterloo joined together to create a platform from which they could actively pursue one of their many passions – singing! It was then that the Water Boys, UWaterloo’s first all-male a cappella group, was officially formed.

GSA exec takes the UW Swing Club to new heights

Many students pursue a graduate degree immediately after finishing their Bachelor’s. Equipped with his Honours Earth Science degree and a commercial pilot’s licence, however, Max Salman headed straight for the skies. As a geophysics surveyor, he spent months over the Amazon in Guyana and the United States, working for several high-profile clients. Salman then headed to Nunavut, Norway, Greenland and Iceland, flying low enough to see herds of muskox below the aircraft.

Pokémaniacs prepare for battle of epic proportions

Pair of Pokémon battle against other Pokémon pair

When it comes to epic battles of fantastical creatures, UW Pokémaniacs
know the ropes. With their recent winning streak against universities from across North America and around the world, the Feds club proves that Pokémon is much more than a simple online video game.

Lights, camera, harmonize

The lights blind you, the crowd grows silent and months of preparation are all on the line. There are no instruments to drown out potential mistakes. Despite the pressure, UWaterloo's a cappella teams sang their way to international victory

Step aside Shakespeare - there are new wordsmiths in town

A Battle of Waterloo was played out via poetry and spoken word this past term as one of UWaterloo’s youngest clubs hosted the Battle of Waterloo Poetry Slam.

Becoming a Team Canada dragon boater

Success is a process; it takes time and effort to achieve great things. For five UWaterloo students who were just named to the Under 24 Canadian National Dragon Boat Squad, success was a process that took time, effort, dedication and teamwork. And paddling. Lots of paddling.
