Hackfest – an annual hackathon hosted by Waterloo’s Portal team, which challenges students to create additional widgets that will enhance the Portal app experience. Usually, this event starts and finishes in one day. However, this year the hackathon went on for ten days straight!
Ever had an idea that would change student life at UWaterloo? Every year dozens of students strive to leave their mark on campus, including the competitors who vie to build a new widget for the student portal. This year, nearly 40 students gathered at the Portal Hackathon to put their skills and creativity to the test.

Engineering students’ topical Rob Ford game wins ‘Funniest Hack’
In just 16 hours, third-year Systems Design Engineering students Chris Ngan and Nick Mostowich created an online platform game, “Crackathon” featuring embattled Mayor Rob Ford. “The development process consisted of a lot of Red Bull,” Nick said of their experience at hackNY’s annual spring hackathon.
UWaterloo grad student’s life-changing app won $25,000 in national hackathon
Carlos Saavedra, a student in Waterloo’s Master of Digital Experience Innovation program at the Stratford Campus, won the first Canadian Open Data Experience, a 48-hour hackathon that challenged participants to create an application that would better the lives of Canadians. Carlos’s invention was awarded the $25,000 grand prize and also won the $1,000 fan favourite prize, as chosen by Canadians in an online poll.
Second-year uWaterloo students conquer 27-hour hackathon
Second year students Rudi Chen and Shida Li have emerged victorious from the 27-hour Nokia Imaging Hackathon in Lund, Sweden. The Computer Science and Software Engineering students, respectively, brought their idea of a Smart Resizing app to life alongside 10 other experienced teams of developers from all over the world.
