There are two types of Gold Medal Awards:

  1. The Governor General's Gold Medal

This is presented each year at the Spring Convocation, athough nominees can be students who graduated the previous fall as well as at that Spring Convocation.

  2. The UW Alumni Gold Medals

There are two of these awarded each year (1 for a master's student and 1 for a doctoral student) at the Fall Convocation. Again, nominees can be from among students graduating in the fall, as well as the previous spring.

AHS can nominate one candidate for each of these awards (1 for the Gold Medal in the spring, and 1 master's and 1 PhD for the alumni medals in the fall). Nominees should be outstanding students. That is, they should have a high grade average (A or A+), strong letters of support from the supervisor and graduate committee members (the external examiner report for doctoral students in important here), and some evidence of scholarly work (publications and/or presentations). If a student is nominated, but does not receive the award, he/she is then eligible for an "outstanding achievement in graduate studies" designation for AHS.

Recommendations for nominations should come from the Associate Chair/Associate Director to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies. The Associate Chair/Associate Director should indicate that the nomination has been approved by the departmental graduate studies committee. Deadlines for the receipt of completed nomination files at the Associate Dean's Office are:

  • MARCH 31ST FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S AWARD
  • AUGUST 31st FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THE ALUMNI AWARDS
