As of September 1, 2024, Approved Doctoral Dissertation Supervisory (ADDS) status has been renamed and changed to Sole-Supervisory Privilege Status (SSPS). There is no change to faculty currently holding ADDS status. Their permissions remain the same, and their official designation will be SSPS2 (more information below).
Faculty members who hold SSPS1 may sole-supervise master’s students.
Faculty members who have SSPS2 may sole-supervise master’s students and PhD students.

The process to request SSPS1/2 status in the Faculty of Health is:
- Requests for SSPS status are initiated by the Chairs/Directors and are forwarded to each academic unit’s Graduate Committee for approval.
- The units’ recommendations together with the Chair’s/Director’s comments are submitted to the Administrator, Faculty Graduate Studies, for consideration by the Faculty Graduate Studies Committee (FGSC) in the Faculty of Health. Requests must be accompanied by a Faculty of Health format curriculum vitae together with any other information relevant to the SSPS criteria and not otherwise contained in the vitae.
- The FGSC, which is Chaired by the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies, will review SSPS1/2 requests from individual academic units.
After the application is approved by the Faculty Associate Dean, Graduate Studies the recommendation for granting of SPSS1/2 status will be forwarded to the Associate Vice President Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs.
