Plinio Morita, a professor in the School of Public Health Sciences, has received an Early Researcher Award (ERA) from the Ontario government for his project, Mobilizing IoT-Based Health and Environmental Data for Increased Public Awareness.

Joy Hutchinson, a Public Health and Health Systems doctoral student, has been awarded a prestigious 2021 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. The award is designed to strengthen Canada's ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. With National Cancer Survivors Day on June 6, Marina Mourtzakis, a Kinesiology professor who leads Waterloo’s Centre for Community, Clinical and Applied Research Excellence, examines how to exercise safely as a cancer survivor during or after treatment.

Sherry Dupuis, a professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, has been appointed a University Research Chair (URC), effective July 1, 2021. The University established the title to recognize faculty members for exceptional achievement in a particular field of knowledge.

David Hammond, a professor in the School of Public Health and Health Systems, along with Geoffrey Fong (Psychology) and Mary Thompson (Statistics and Actuarial Science), were jointly awarded a 2021 Governor General’s Innovation Award for the International Tobacco Control (ITC) Project.
