What keeps you on the grind?
I often find myself walking through each day, doing what I need to do, performing the tasks I need to complete, without really thinking about why.
Why am I spending hours studying this again?
Oh yeah that’s right. I have a test next week.
And the grind continues. But I realized that my train of thought was incomplete. In fact, the train's engine hadn’t even started. There exists an infinite expanse of answers as to why I put in effort each day, but a test next week was not the one I was looking for.
I needed a bigger picture, so I went for a walk one day and decided to think.
I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of technology and entertainment. First it was radio. Then television. Somewhere along the way, they introduced simple 8-bit video games. The internet gave birth to online video streaming platforms and revolutionized multiplayer games. Then virtual reality became widely accessible, being used in both the entertainment and medical fields.
I could write an essay on all of this, but that’s not the point.
I’m a computer engineering student because I’m obsessed with the indispensable role that technology plays in our world of entertainment. It’s in the movies we watch. It’s in the music we listen to. I draw digital art and compose electronic music for the same reason.
I work hard at these things because I love them, and because I have a goal.
That doesn’t mean I have every step planned out, and that doesn’t mean I know exactly where I want to be five years from now. All it means is that I have a sense of direction. I know that the work I put in every day will push me in that direction, and that’s enough to keep me on the grind.
What keeps you on the grind?
