They are among the most difficult questions confronting humanity — and the most urgently in need of a response. How can we prevent climate change from becoming a full-blown global climate catastrophe that imperils our very existence? How can we stop driving thousands of animal and plant species into extinction? How can eight billion people take what they need from this planet without taking so much that they destroy it?

In close cooperation with the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association and the Glow Centre, the University of Waterloo is making campus more inclusive for Two-Spirit, Trans, Non-Binary and gender non-conforming members of the campus community by increasing access to all-gender washrooms. In Environment, EV1-118 and 321 have been converted to single-stall gender neutral washrooms. So have EV2-1032 and EV3 4937.

The leading world body for the assessment of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has released their final installment of the Sixth Assessment Report. It indicates there are multiple, feasible and effective options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to human-caused climate change, but we must act now. As Canada’s aviation sector struggles through post-pandemic turbulence, a major University of Waterloo initiative has taken off to offer it stability — and even clearer skies ahead. Since its founding in late 2021, the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) has assembled a diverse, multidisciplinary team of more than 100 academics pooling world-class talents to deal with the challenges facing this vital industry, all while mentoring a new generation who will continue the job.

Advancing sustainable development

There is lots of work underway at the University of Waterloo to advance the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From March 6 to 10, Waterloo community members from across campus will be marking SDG Week Canada by hosting activities to showcase their efforts to advance the goals.
