Today's students learn best through experiential learning. Fieldtrips give them the opportunity to touch, feel, and hear what they're learning about in the classroom as well as experience new cultures and practices outside of their own world. Upper-year undergraduate students taking GEOG 460 visited four local community projects to learn about food sustainability in Waterloo Region.   

Tracelyn Cornelius (MEB ’21, PhD in progress) is the anti-racism communications manager in the University’s central communications unit. She is also a PhD student in the Sustainability Management program in the School of Environment, Enterprise and Development (SEED). She reflects on her work and studies.

On November 29^th, after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the University of Waterloo and the Faculty of Environment, celebrated GivingTuesday─ a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.

To provide a bit of a boost for students heading into the end of term, the Faculty of Environment hosted the first ENV Cares event on Thursday, December 1st. From 12pm to 2pm the EV3 Atrium was filled with faculty, staff and students who came to share some sweet snacks and a sense of community. Students enjoyed cookies from Little Mushroom Catering and post-it notes with encouraging messages written by faculty and staff.

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) have become one of the most important tools government and industry use to understand environmental risks associated with new development projects. But the environment is more than water and soil. And as practiced today, EIAs have many blind spots, often failing to include people and nature in meaningful ways.

Environment & Business grad Eric Lam (BES 2018) was recently recognized as one of Corporate Knights’ Top 30 under 30 Sustainability Leaders of 2022. Awarded annually, the list celebrates Canadian youth leaders making waves in sustainability.
