Travelling to Melbourne

Guests flying to Melbourne from either other areas of Australia or abroad are likely to land at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (Code MEL).

There are multiple transit options between the airport and your accommodations or the University of Melbourne.

Melbourne Connect is easily accessible via public transit and car.

By public transit - Tram:

By public transit - Tram:

Melbourne has a large public transport network of buses, trams, and trains to get around the city. Maps of the network and its various stops can be found here

Melbourne Connect is located at Tram Stop #1 (Melbourne University/Swanston St). This stop is serviced by the following tram lines:

  • 1 (East Coburg - South Melbourne),

  • 16 (Melbourne University - Kew),

  • 3 (Melbourne University - East Malvern),

  • 5 (Melbourne University - Malvern),

  • 6 (Moreland - Glen Iris),

  • 64 (Melbourne Univeristy - East Brighton),

  • 67 (Melbourne University - Carnegie), and

  • 72 (Melbourne University - Camberwell).

Guests staying in the CBD (i.e. downtown Melbourne) can easily catch these trams from Melbourne Central Station and Flinders Street Station, or at one of the many stops on Swanston Street. Timetables for trams can be found at Public Transport Victoria (PTV)'s website.

By the time of the conference, The University of Melbourne will also be serviced by a new train station, Parkville Station. Guests taking the train to Parkville Station will emerge on Grattan Street and will need to make the short walk to Swanston Street to reach the building.

To use public transit, riders will need a Myki card which can be purchased at all 7-Elevens in the city, at select train stations and tram stops, or for Android users as a digital card on your Google Wallet. Myki's can be loaded with money (Myki Money) or a transit pass for the number of days you will be in the City. As the conference is in Zone 1 of the network, the cost of a 2 hour trip on the network is $5.30 AUD with a daily fare cap of $10.60 AUD

By Car:

Melbourne Connect does not have onsite parking.

The closest parking location to the building is Cardigan House Parking at 96 Grattan St. Carlton, VIC 3053. This is the north-easy corner of Cardigan St. and Grattan St. It is across the road from Melbourne Connect. Information about prices and payment methods can be found at Parkopedia.

Travelling to Melbourne (Domestic and International Guests):

Guests flying to Melbourne from either other areas of Australia or abroad are likely to land at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (Code MEL).

There are multiple transit options between the airport and your accommodations or the University of Melbourne.

Taxis and Rideshares:

SkyBus to Southern Cross Station:

There is an express SkyBus that runs every 10-15 minutes between Melbourne Tullamarine Airport and Southern Cross Station (public transit train station). This connects the airport with the local public transport network. Adult one-way tickets are $23.90 AUD, with return fares costing $40 AUD. Tickets and more information can be found at the SkyBus website.

Public Transit:

It is currently difficult to use public transport to get to or leave from Tullamarine Airport, and we do not recommend it. While several buses exist, they do not travel close to the CBD or the conference venue.

For completeness, the following public buses run to Melbourne Airport:

  • 478 (Airport West Shopping Centre to Melbourne Airport)

  • 479 (Airport West Shopping Centre to Sunbury Station via Melbourne Airport)

  • 482 (Airport West Shopping Centre to Melbourne Airport via South Centre Road)

  • 901 (Frankston to Melbourne Airport)

All public buses run out of Terminal 4 and will require a Myki card to access. More information about the airport buses can be found at the Public Transport Victoria website

Tourism Information

Melbourne

Guests staying in and around the CBD (downtown Melbourne) will find that it is easy to walk between various locations. For trips within and around the city, we recommend either public transportation or a rideshare service as both are fairly reliable.

Notably with public transport, we encourage guests to take advantage of the Free Tram Zone. Within specific bounds of the CBD, guests can take an tram free of charge. The map of the Free Tram Zone can be found here.
